Boarding cattery or in-home cat sitting?
For many cats, staying at home is the calmest option. They know their own home, familiar smells, favourite sleeping spots and daily routine. In-home cat sitting can then be a good solution: your cat stays in their own environment, while someone still visits for care, attention and a check-up.
The costs of a boarding cattery can also add up quickly, especially if you have multiple cats. A professional cat sitter who comes to your home can then be not only more comfortable for your cat, but also more affordable.
How long can I leave my cat alone?
A cat can be alone for a while, but during your holiday daily check-ups are sensible. How often this is needed depends on your cat, the situation at home and how many cats you have.
During your holiday, it is better not to leave your cat without a check-up for more than 24 hours. Something can always happen: a cat may eat less, vomit, hide or suddenly behave differently. Even an independent cat benefits from regular checks, a clean litter box and a little attention.
During a visit, I therefore do not only check whether there is enough food and water. I also pay attention to behaviour, appetite, the litter box and small signs that may stand out.
How many litter boxes do I need?
A useful guideline is: number of cats + 1.
Do you have one cat? Then two litter boxes are ideal.
Do you have two cats? Then three litter boxes are often better.
Not every cat wants to use the same litter box, and some cats prefer to pee and poop separately. Multiple litter boxes create more calm and reduce the chance of accidents in the house.
How many water bowls are sensible?
It is better to place several water bowls around the house. Especially if you are away for longer, this is not an unnecessary luxury.
Many cats naturally drink a little too little. Multiple drinking spots in the house, such as water bowls or a drinking fountain, can encourage your cat to drink more often.
If you use a drinking fountain, I recommend always placing ordinary water bowls as well. That way, water is still available if the fountain stops working or does not function properly.
