Leaving your cat at home during holiday: what should you consider?

By Kattenoppas Enschede on Sunday, June 7, 2026

Many cat owners wonder what is best when they go away for a few days or longer. A cat is often attached to its own home, but that does not mean good checks and care are no longer needed.

How long can a cat stay home alone?

How long a cat can stay home alone depends on the cat. Age, health, personality, eating habits and medication all matter.

Some cats seem very independent, but still need familiar moments, checks and attention. During a holiday, it is wise to look beyond food and water and also notice how your cat is behaving.

Why daily checks matter

During a visit, I look at more than the practical care. Is your cat eating normally? Do they come out? Does the litter box look different than usual?

Daily checks help small changes stand out early. A photo or short update also gives reassurance, because you can see how things are going at home while you are away.

Food, water and litter box

Fresh water, the right food and a clean litter box are the basics. Still, these basic things are exactly what should be checked carefully.

A water bowl that has tipped over, food that has not been eaten or a litter box that smells different can say something about how your cat is doing.

Attention, behaviour and small changes

Many cats like routine. Staying at home can reduce stress for many cats compared with moving to a cattery or unfamiliar place.

Attention still matters. One cat may want to play or cuddle, while another prefers to watch quietly first. Personal care always depends on what your cat is comfortable with.

Medication and special care

If your cat needs medication or special care, it is important to discuss this clearly beforehand. I follow your instructions and pay close attention during each visit to whether the care still suits how your cat is behaving.

If I am unsure or concerned, I get in touch. I am not a veterinarian, but I do pay careful attention to signs that may be important.

In-home cat sitting as a familiar solution

With in-home cat sitting, your cat stays in their familiar environment while someone visits daily for care, attention and checks. You can also read more about how it works.
